Universities receive accreditation when government-approved accrediting agencies recognize a university for fulfilling established education standards that ensure a high quality of education. The standards used to assess a university’s quality of education vary but usually include evaluating the university’s mission statement, goals and objectives, its student admission requirements, its resources and resource allocation, and the quality of its educational offerings and its faculty. In the United States, the only role the government plays in the accreditation process is to identify which accrediting agencies are reliable authorities on the quality of education offered by institutions. Private non-government accrediting agencies exist on both a regional and national basis. Some of the most common accrediting agencies include but are not limited to the following:
With fierce competition in the job market and a rising demand for higher skill levels, obtaining an accredited degree offers students many benefits in today’s workforce. Accredited online degrees are becoming increasingly valuable as online education institutions such as the University of Phoenix, AIU, and many others become recognized, reputable names. Also, since February 2006 when Congress repealed the “Fifty-percent Rule”, students from more accredited online schools are now eligible for federal student aid, making earning an online degree an even more fiscally attractive option. Contrarily, many employers often don’t recognize non-accredited degrees. Further, other institutions of education may not accept courses from non-accredited institutions, making it difficult to transfer credits. But how do I know if my school is accredited?Since education institutions sometimes use the term ‘accredited’ rather loosely, it is important to know how to check if your school is actually accredited. First, the description of the university or institution should clearly state that it is “accredited” and list its accrediting agency. When the term “accredited” is not specified, be weary of terms such as “licensed”, “registered”, “authorized”, “recognized” etc. that institutions lacking accreditation might use to shade the fact that they are indeed not accredited. Next, investigate the reputability of the accrediting agency. Is the agency recognized by the U.S. government via the Department of Education as an accountable accrediting agency? To check, simply visit the U.S. Department of Education’s listings of national and regional accrediting agencies Alternatively, one may also check the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The CHEA is a nongovernmental coordinating agency that evaluates accrediting agencies in the United States and maintains a list of national and regional accrediting agencies that meet its high quality standards. Well, yes and no. While the accrediting agencies hold online and distance learning institutions and “brick and mortar” institutions to the same high standards for quality, the nature of online and distance learning itself requires some differences in the standards of evaluation and the evaluation process for accreditation. For instance, faculty accessibility and help at online education institutions take on different forms than at a traditional, physical campus. These differences necessitate new standards of evaluation for online and distance learning institutions (which can be found at the CHEA Monograph Series 2002 Accreditation and Assuring Quality in Distance Learning Trackback(0)

it´s important to learn more about the education in the wordl, but in my country Mexico there are not opportunities to all people because if you obtain a degree in a public school it´s very difficult to obtain a new degree because it´s expensive in a particular school, if you prefered the public education first you need to past an examen and there are a lot of peopel and a little places to go. the distance learning is the best form to obtain a new degree.

You won't get a degree or other certifications from them, but if you are just interested in the education, you'll be surprised at the many options that are available.

As online education and distance learning become increasingly popular options in today’s fast-paced, technologically-oriented society, it is important to recognize that not all online education programs adhere to the same standards of education- that not all schools are accredited universities. Today, accredited online degrees are recognized as equitable to those obtained at traditional “brick and mortar” accredited campuses. Accredited degrees confer immense benefits and opportunities to students that non-accredited degrees do not.
