Introduction to a series of articles on the potential global effects of online education The age of the internet has merged the worlds of technology and academia to bring reputable and accredited education right into living rooms, offices, and internet cafés around the world. The flexibility afforded by online education enables more people around the world to pursue advanced degrees and continue their education at their own pace. Further, by expanding global access to education by cutting-across traditional physical and social barriers to legitimate education, online education has already and will continue to forge unprecedented changes not only in the world of academia but also in global levels of education and concurrently in societies around the world. Online education allows people in remote locations to obtain legitimate degrees who previously may have been too far away from traditional ‘brick and mortar’ universities to earn that degree. Also, online education enables those previously barred by oppressive societal constructs from publicly pursuing education to earn degrees in the privacy of their homes. Additionally, as internet-access increasingly becomes a household good, with internet penetration in North America nearing 70%* and total world penetration nearing 17%*, online education presents the opportunity for universal access to accredited education.
